We all have Basic human needs in life. How we choose to fulfill those needs, and prioritize them, is what will shape the type of person we become and the direction our life will take.
According to Tony Robbins, the following six needs are as follows (with my own commentary):
Everyone needs a certain level of safety, assurance and predictability. Survival is the foundation of our most basic behavior. Like food shelter and water. When things are very uncertain, we tend to feel vulnerable and freaked out! To regain a sense of certainty, we reach for different methods of comfort such as friends and family, a good movie, or even addictive/abusive behavior. Anything that’ll give us a sense of safety and reassurance! When we feel certain there is no danger, we can relax and focus on our other needs. If the need for certainty is entirely UNMET, we feel stress, pain and dis ease. Any of these basic human needs that get left unmet becomes an unhealthy energy stored in our body which causes illness. But that’s a topic for later SpiritualDiscussions.
Humans are a paradoxically structured lot! And contrast is one of the necessities of life, or we’d get bored! So we also need the next in line of the six basic human needs which is:
We all need to change things up every now and then! Watch a new movie, travel to new places. This keeps life interesting and exciting because we don’t know what to expect. The element of surprise adds juice to life!
Until the uncertainty level becomes to high and fear of the unknown sets in. Too much uncertainty brings on fear, while not enough will cause boredom. So we already see a need for balance.
Deep down, we all need to feel that we are important, unique, and special. This can be accomplished in many ways. Some people get it by becoming high achievers, others feel significance by the sixth basic need of contribution. Some people find significance by putting others down, or bullying them because it makes them feel like they are better or have power.
Others become eccentric in ways we can’t even imagine and most of us don’t want to! Proving that if we strive for too much significance, we end up totally violating the next need.
We need to feel like we are part of the pack! We see this in social structures from the family unit, to national patriotism. It’s our culture that gives us the feeling of belonging. Every animal (and perhaps plants) have a need for connection! Structures are set up and pecking orders are established in order to fulfill this need.
It also blends with the 3rd need of significance. Without connection we can quickly become depressed and even suicidal! Nobody wants to be an outcast! So we will often do things that feel uncomfortable or unnatural for the fulfillment of this need. Many join clubs or gangs that take away our sense of right & wrong, sacrificing moral values just to be part of something larger than themselves. Hmmm Spiritual connection comes into play here doesn’t it!? Different cultures having different religious values and customs that often twist the truth ( or seem to) to get the need for significance and connection met. Seems we will go to great lengths to fill these needs! But often at a GREAT price!
But the last two Basic human needs are our salvation so to speak.
The old saying goes that everything either grows or dies. And while there is a certain truth to that; we also find that from death, new life springs forth! So to grow, we have to be willing to let something die and rot away, to fertilize the soil for new growth to take place. This could be old habits, old friends or any number of things that no longer serve a healthy purpose for us. They’ve become worn out!
This happens when we say “I’ve HAD IT!!” And mean it! We then set sail for new territory. Often finding it to be “terror tory” instead! What we mistake for growth can often turn up as greed! The need for more and more only to find out we spent our life chasing a ghost! The wrong Ghost! LOL
But even in this; growth happens! We learn from our mistakes and sometime it takes a whole lifetime (or possibly many if you believe in that, which I personally do) to learn the lesson and grow! Consider this…infinity is outside of time. God is outside of time. Could it be that we enter time upon physical birth to grow spirituality? Many ancient traditions point to this.
But that’s beside the point! We all need something to strive for. Something that’ll challenge us to grow and take our lives to the next level.
Is the desire to make a difference and contribute to a “greater good”. What gets crazy is our idea of what is “good”! In essence, contribution is a universal need for everyone. Everyone needs to feel they serve a purpose in the world. How we fill that need depends greatly on our perception of what our purpose is, as well as what is “good or bad”. My earlier post on THE LAWS OF CHAOS touch on the problem of perception in the world.
Spirituality helps us become aware of these needs! It’s an important step in our attempt to meet them in a way that contributes to the highest good of all that is! Becoming aware of spiritual concepts will take you out of the hypnosis of the daily grind. To gain a greater understanding of how to evaluate your needs and the needs of the planet. It’ll also help you understand why you do certain things you really don’t want to do, because it becomes more and more obvious that it fulfills many of your basic needs in a healthy or unhealthy way.
Each person is also obviously unique! Each will have a need to prioritize these needs in different ways and in a different order. That doesn’t make it wrong! It just make them seem different by acting out these needs in different ways according to their understanding. But we are all after the same thing! Perfect balance! The Esoteric tradition of alchemy points to this so well! Like baking a cake we are all just trying to get the recipe of life to taste good!
So out of these 6 basic human needs the one you value most will shape your destiny! Your perception of the world (positive or negative) will shape the direction of that destiny. Through spiritual growth, the meaning of these needs will change.
Certainty- becomes peace of mind.
Variety- becomes joy.
Significance- comes from contribution and a sense of love.
Connection- deepens to all things and feelings of separation fall away.
Growth- Well…. growth just accelerates and gets easier and less painful!
Contribution goes to sharing the peace love and joy of a corrected perception.
Sounds good to me!
Next week we’ll find out who’s your type! Your Archetype that is! Don’t miss it! Archetypes are a very useful tool for growth!
