I’d like to talk today about belief and the shocking truth of what it is.
Consider for a moment people like Harry Houdini, Doug Henning, David Copperfield and Criss Angel (My personal favorite) . What is the point of these talented people? What are they teaching us? They fool us into thinking that they have done the miraculous. Buildings seem to disappear, people get sawed in half and they even seem to read our minds! We know that these things are not real, but we are still amazed by the illusion. It’s a lot of fun! But the truth is, they are actually great teachers if we pay attention.
What do they teach? That the axiom “seeing is believing” is a bald face lie! But more than that, they teach us how easily we will believe in illusions! That appearances are just that, and nothing more! But let’s get deeper into the lessons they teach.
If we were to learn what the magic trick is, and how it was done, the entertainment value is gone. No more fun! That’s why a magician will never reveal his secret! He’d go broke! So In reality these people are professional liars. That’s not a bad thing; I enjoy this entertainment very much so I’m not name calling.
Here’s my point!
A magician would never reveal his secret because knowledge replaces belief! If you knew the trick, the effect would simply not exist! We’d all yawn and go home!
So belief and the shocking truth is: Our beliefs create illusions of reality!
What is a belief? We stated earlier that it was “A state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing” Our habit of mind is our reality!
What makes a personality? Habit of mind! What makes a person go from rags to riches? OK; “luck” may have something to do with it, if ya suddenly win the lottery or something. I’ll give you that. But unless their habit of mind changes, that story of rags to riches will reverse quickly!
What does that have to do with Spirituality? EVERYTHING!
We all agree that a spirit is without form; yes? Then to be spiritual is to be formless. So how can we be truly spiritual if we are walking around in a world of physical form?? If belief is just a habit of mind and I believe in GOD…. am I creating an illusion for myself? WOW! Tough question huh? How do we answer THAT one!?
Ask The Magician within! I’m getting a little ahead of myself here But we have four basic Archetypes we all deal with. King Warrior Magician and Lover. Which we will get into a a later time.
For now, just remember,
above we said knowledge replaces belief. Hmmm… The Bible says “Know Thyself” and “Be still and know that I am GOD”.
Could it be that I have beliefs that keep me from knowing Who or What this thing called GOD is? Have I created illusions about GOD? What about the beliefs I have about MYSELF!?
“Be still and know that I am GOD”. “Habits of mind”.
I don’t know about you; but the habit of my mind is to chatter away about mostly nothing!
What would happen if we could just shut the mind down? To really be STILL! Not likely right? Have you ever tried to have NO thoughts? Next to impossible isn’t it? AND frustrating! Who needs that!
A Mind game that’s FUN!
What if we investigated our beliefs like a detective would at a crime scene? By observing our thoughts quietly. By just noticing what thoughts come up and imagine them to be like a passing train. Each thought a box car with the thought written on it. Where did that car originate? What’s in it? Where is it going?
Does that sound a bit like meditation? Label it anything you like! But as a truck driver I have nothing to do but think! Can you tell? One day I got bored and decided to play a game with myself. (as described above.) WOW! It didn’t take long before I had to ask some deeper questions! So It became a habit of my mind! From that habit My world has changed dramatically! Yours can too!
The shocking truth about belief? Nothing physically changed that I have noticed as of yet. But My view of the world and the people in sure has! Including the view about myself!
That guy with self esteem issues is fast disappearing and being replaced by self compassion that I can share with others!
Yeah, good for me right? What about you? That’s who you are really interested in isn’t it? You want to know how to make a better YOU. Well that’s why I told you my little story. It worked for me! Why not try it? You can do it anywhere and anytime and nobody has to know! No Lotus position required! LOL
To illustrate my point even further. Here is a quote from A COURSE IN MIRACLES chapter 25 iii Perception and Choice
“To the extent to which you value guilt, to that extent will you perceive a world where attack is justified. To the extent to which you recognize that guilt is meaningless, to that extent you will recognize that attack cannot BE justified. This is in accordance with perceptions fundamental law. You see what you believe is there, and you believe it is there because you want it there. Perception has no other law than this. The rest but stem’s from this, to hold it up and offer it support. This is perception’s form. Adapted to this world, of GOD’S more basic law; that love creates itself; and nothing but itself.”
Now you know the secret!
Because now you know that knowledge replaces belief! We hang on to our perceptions because we love them! But if we look at our perception’s honestly, without attachment, how do they serve us?
A Favorite quote of mine is from Oprah Winfrey: “When you KNOW better; you DO better!”
Doesn’t take a genius to figure that out! Right? But do we seek the knowledge that will help us do better? Not usually! We usually complain how our life sucks and leave it at that! “Poor ME!” We say we hate our circumstance but do nothing to change it. Why? “You see what you believe is there, and you believe it is there because you want it there.”
Ouch! Guess that’s why they say TRUTH HURTS! 🙂
What are your thoughts on this? How do your beliefs serve you…Good or bad!
