Let’s talk about character today. What is character? How can we change the traits we don’t like about ourselves to become better people?
I don’t know about you, but trying to change some of my character traits has been an uphill battle! I found myself constantly struggling to change it, mold it and fight against it to become the man I wanted to see in the mirror. Sound familiar?
How hard do you try to “Be the change you want to see in the world” only to fall flat on your face? I for one have lived a lifetime struggling to NOT be myself but something else or someone else I could feel comfortable with. Not that I hated myself really. I just didn’t like the role I seem to be playing in life. It seemed to me that many others didn’t either! I heard them say so, much more often than I care to remember! Both to me and behind my back.
That hurt and set me up for a pattern of low self esteem that honestly still tries to assert itself to this day! People got so used to me playing that character they expected it; and then criticized me for living out their expectation! A double standard now that I think about it! We expect THIS but want you to be THAT! No wonder I felt confused and lost!! Who can live up that kind of standard? Where no consistency existed, they wanted ME to be consistent! How can one be consistent when the model for it is missing!?
Let’s do some word play for a minute. Think about the words we use to describe people. Words like ACT, ROLE and CHARACTER, DRAMATIC, PLAYFUL, FUNNY ETC.
OK, Now I have a question for you.
What do you expect when you turn on the T.V.? Characters, actors, comedy, drama and a play or script. Right? Hmmmmm! How interesting!
CHARACTERS or ACTORS that PLAY a ROLE in a movie!! Often that movie is considered even better when based on real life!
What if you looked at yourself and others as actors in a real life movie?
I want to challenge you as well as encourage you to practice this! WHY? Because if you get good at it. Life is a total HOOT!! Even the role I catch myself in at any moment can be laughable in my most dramatic moments! If I can convince myself or rather REMEMBER that life IS a movie! That kind of thinking allows me to step back and relax! The script is MINE to write as I please! The “supporting actors” will improvise their “character” according to the “role” I “play”!
If I “act” angry, loving, victimized etc. they will support that role in my movie! If I attack they are sure to support that role by defending! If I defend, they see weakness and will either attack it or coddle me depending on the role THEY play.
So if you want to have a spiritual character, study the role! “Be the change you want to see in the world” By preparing yourself with the knowledge and traits of the CHARACTERS that excel in it. Yeah I’m talking about Jesus, Buddha, The Dalai Lama or any others that can help you play that role better. As you act it out you become that character! Before know it, the Truth overcomes any character or role we play and the illusions of who or what we are fall away! They are no longer of use to us!
If you want to have Wealth you can use the same principals! How do you think T.V. Actors play their part so convincingly!? They get an Idea of what it would be like to be the character they are portraying and become that!
So if we become a better character, others will support how YOU act as I stated above.
By playing YOUR part better, you also support them by your example! The advantage is yours in KNOWING your role better than they know theirs or in knowing people who can help you play your part better!
When you “fail” you’re much less likely to take it personally and internalize it because you KNOW it’s just a role! You just need more practice playing it! NO BIG DEAL!
Now saying to yourself “I AM” Can have the power God intended because this tool I shared with you allows you to play in life! Instead of getting all wrapped up about your character!
Have fun with it! Play with the idea! Get into the Character YOU want to become and do what it takes to become it!
When you see yourself getting down, remind yourself that your getting “out of character” and laugh at yourself for playing something else for a bit! If you need to…Over play the character like a clown would to help you laugh at yourself!
But I wouldn’t suggest doing that to others unless your a REALLY good clown! If your intention is to help them make fun of themselves; go for it!
But if you are making fun of them, then that would be out of your spiritual character.
Apologizing for the mistake can bring you right back very quickly! So can forgiving them! After all it’s just a character flaw. They might not even know what part they are playing or what the movie is even about! Who could be mad at them for that!? Help them figure it out! That’s your character! Write and study the script! BE the movie STAR! “Be the change you want to see in the world”! Trust that every day you practice that intention you ARE getting closer to the goal of a world class “actor” in whatever endeavor you choose! Actors take action! Ready! Action! Role it! Cut! Edit! Print! Take two! Take 64!
Just remember for every movie star there are 1000 critics! Not everyone will love your performance! If they don’t…Piss on them! It’s your movie and they can change the channel! LOL 😉 Take the criticism that’s useful and use it! Trash the rest!
See ya in the funny papers!
