How does the Brain, Spirituality, and Self-Transformation play a role in who we are and who we can become?
Perhaps you never thought about it, but spiritual self transformation comes in many forms. Many that we wouldn’t necessarily recognize as a spiritual path. Rehab from addiction, or going to a psychiatrist or therapist all take us a step closer to spiritual awakening. By overcoming old thought systems that no longer serve us, or humanity, we become closer to the altruistic nature of our truest Self. Often it is these very people that guide us on our path to self transformation until we progress along the path far enough to let go of self defeating behaviors all together and reach a more “enlightened” state.
I’m beginning to see a pattern of what it takes to awaken to this state. How our brain actually plays a role in this path to awakening. Imagine those old LP records of years ago, before CD’s made them obsolete. A needle would follow a grove to transmit an electrical signal that would be transformed to the speakers to make sound. Our brain works much the same way! How many times have you had the same thought play in your head over and over and over? No matter how hard you tried to get a new thought or idea about yourself, that old recording keeps coming back to haunt you in some fashion! The words “I can’t” usually come into play somewhere in the recorded thought! There are Neurons and electrical pathways in our brain; just like those old records they follow a certain path. The good news is, we can record over those brain neurons and make new paths! This is why FAITH plays such a huge role!
Through faith, new neurons in the brain are formed to open new pathways of thought that were unavailable before. When we learn new things, or gain access to new information, we actually “grow a brain”! LOL New beliefs are formed as well as new patterns in our brain’s neuro network. To see more about this science click here for a very interesting and educational video!
It talks about how spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation are exercises that are extremely helpful regarding how our brain is connected to spirituality and self transformation. Scientists have studied nuns and Buddhist monks during prayer and meditation. They discovered that a part of the brain turns on called the “frontal lobe” which is like the volume control of the brain. When the frontal lobe begins to work properly, it quiets down all the other circuits of the brain so nothing else is being processed, just a single-minded thought. All of a sudden they started to experience altruistic states of compassion, joy and inspiration.
Other similar studies have actually proven that spiritual concentration and religious conviction can change brain activity and boost the body’s immune system, which can lead to spontaneous remission of a disease or the complete healing of an illness. So prayer is as effective as penicillin in curing people, but without the side-effects! I guess that proves how Jesus healed the sick! He used the power of his own mind to open a pathway to the thoughts of God!
So how can us “normal” folk create miracles of healing? By accepting first that it IS possible and practicing that thought until it becomes reality! How do you learn anything except by repetition? The old saying “ya can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is completely false! It just takes longer to UN-learn the bad habits he already has and make new brain pathways to allow for the new behavior.
This is the whole idea behind A Course In Miracles. to re-map the neuro networking in our brain to bring about a state of peace. It has workbook lessons that train your mind to think differently by practicing new thoughts.
Spirituality is mind training. Mind training is brain training and brain training is transformational for all that we think is real. If we think we already know what is real, we leave no way to open a new path in our brain. Instead we keep using the same old path and wonder why things don’t get better! We often don’t take the time to stop and listen to our own mind and question it’s validity! We’d rather be right than happy because we THINK being right makes us smart, special, or has it’s own validity we just can’t give up. So we argue and fight to keep that old path even if we know it doesn’t serve our best interest! The groove of the old pattern is often too deep in our subconscious to just yank out and throw away. Our identity would be at risk! Sounds scary doesn’t it? To risk your identity? What is your goal? If there is ANYTHING you’re are trying to change about yourself; are you not trying to change your identity in some way? Who you think you are and how people see and react to you is your identity! If your trying to change in any way you must not be at peace within yourself. It’s your mind and “It’s all in your head” is the truest statement we hate to hear!
Spiritual practices are important to our health, wealth, and well-being in all aspects of life! Yet most people either don’t practice at all, or if they do they only do it at “appropriate” and appointed times. How much do we lose out on by not taking our spiritual self-transformation seriously enough to do in every moment? According to the video above our whole life, and the world we live in could be transformed by a simple change of mind through spirituality and it’s practices.
It doesn’t matter what spiritual practices you do or religion you belong to
