Have you ever heard or said the words “self-fulfilling prophecy.”? That phrase is much truer than almost anyone realizes!
The Law Of Thinking states that Thought is the first cause of everything we experience in life. Our way of thinking will always shape our situations. They direct our actions, determine the opportunities that come our way, and affect the outcome of the things we attempt. They are the cause of our triumphs, as well as many of our failures in life. But The biggest lesson I’ve learned is, that they are ALWAYS the cause of my emotional state!
Consider this often and notice! If you feel angry, sad, happy etc. What thoughts preceded the emotion? What was the story you told yourself to bring about that emotional state? We tell ourselves stories without ceasing! Never stopping to notice the effect of the stories we tell. Not only to ourselves, but to others. Usually the stories we tell ourselves coincide with the stories we tell each other. We seek confirmation of the “truth” of the stories we tell.
Listen closely to how most conversations go. We tell someone a story about ourselves, or someone else, and look for someone that will agree with our point of view. If the person we are talking to agrees, we tend to like them! If they don’t, we’ll often argue to get them to agree with us! Often to the point of a fist fight; or on a larger scale, war!
Earlier; we talked about beliefs. In that post I stated that a belief is just a thought that we keep thinking. Above, I said that thoughts direct our actions. Determine the opportunities that come our way, and affect the outcome of the things we attempt. Perhaps you’ve also heard another common phrase! ”THOUGHT CREATES!”
Over the past twenty plus years, I can’t tell you how often I’ve heard this on my personal development journey! What I could never figure out was HOW it creates! For years, I thought, “OK! All I have to do is think positively, and positive things will come my way!” That’s what they say; right? Use positive affirmations, dream boards, and all that stuff. I did all that! And; perhaps like you; nothing happened! Are these people just making a buck on us poor folks trying to get a grasp on a better life!? I’m sure there are a few of those out there, but for the most part, that is not the case.
So!…”What gives!? Why can’t I DO THIS?” Some of you may ask. I asked myself this same question many times. But it began to dawn on me: “Ah! That’s why they called it “THE SECRET”! “
Let me explain how The Law Of Thinking works.
Many people who begin to read about universal laws, thought creation, and the like, believe (there’s that word again!) that if they can just hold the thought : “ I want Fill in the blank”; long enough, and strongly enough, they should be able to manifest it.
Well… sorry but no cigar! The Law Of Thinking doesn’t quite work that way. Pay attention here because it took me a loooong time to figure this out! Here’s “the secret”.
Have you also heard people say NOT to use the words “I want”? Here’s why they say that. Saying we “want” something points to an inner dialog we have with ourselves. That we “want it” points to the fact it’s not here. Obvious so far right? But what lies beneath “it’s not here”? An inner dialog that I don’t have it! The thought we keep having! Which is…? A belief! Still confused? Don’t worry so was I! So let’s try to break it into a “Thinking for dummies” book format if we can.
How do we normally think? What format do we use?… WORDS! Otherwise known as self-talk. It’s important to really listen to the choice of words we tell ourselves!
Here’s an example of how The Law Of Thinking works; that in all honesty hits a bit too close to home, but what the heck.
Let’s say I wanted a new Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck. ( Because I do! LOL) According to all those gurus out there, I’m suppose to picture the color, see and feel myself driving it, smell the upholstery etc. etc. Right? Got it! So, I do all that! I start noticing black Dodge Ram 1500 pickup trucks everywhere! I cut pictures and post them where I can see them. I do all the stuff they say I should do. But!! While I’m busy doing all of this, what I’m NOT paying attention to is… all the inner dialog running just below the surface! The “ I can’t afford it now” or the “Yeah; I wish!” sarcasm and the “Someday Isle” syndrome. (Some day I’ll have it.)
What’s going on here in this example? (Besides the fact I’m telling on myself! 😉
I’m confirming a belief! Yet I’m too busy following the “secret formula” to notice the real secret! That; I’m not paying attention to the real dialog I’m having with myself. Deep down below all the surface thought noise I’ve created for myself. I never noticed it as a distraction! I never heard the thoughts of “Yeah! I wish” or “Someday!” That puts off or post pones the having of it!
So If “thought creates”. What would I be creating for myself in this scenario? An inner conflict! Therefor, what would I manifest? Conflict, of course! Then what happens? I begin to notice the conflict and start the same inner dialog that has kept the “good life” from me all along! Thoughts that cause frustration, stress, and all the other baggage.
Until I notice the baggage I’m carrying and re-frame my thoughts in a believable way, my course will remain the way it has been.
What does this have to do with spiritualdiscussions? How does discussing this help my spiritual practice, you might ask?
If we practice noticing the inner dialog that blocks us from having the material “good life”; who knows what else you and I might notice!
The point is this. By practicing awareness, AWARENESS comes!
Remember that a believe is a thought that you keep having. Which makes it a…? HABIT!!
Here’s a belief I have. Everyone is an addict! A thought addict! Very few of of us ever notice our addiction to the thoughts going on in our heads. Even fewer ever think about even trying to!! And an even smaller number ever kick the bad thought habits and replace them with good ones. Admittedly, it’s the hardest habit anyone can kick!
Oh crap! Here we go! Now I have to ask myself a question….
How’s that belief working for ya Rick!??? 😉
