Since this blog is called spiritual discussions, I thought it may be a good idea to start with defining spirituality.
Wikipedia Says: “ The term spirituality lacks a definitive definition, although social scientists have defined spirituality as the search for “the sacred,” where “the sacred” is broadly defined as that which is set apart from the ordinary and worthy of veneration.
The term “spirituality” is derived from the Latin spiritualitas and the Biblical “roeach/pneuma” . It means to be put in motion, to be a living person, and being driven. In a Biblical context it means being animated by God.
The use of the term “spirituality” has changed throughout the ages. In modern times spirituality is often separated from religion, and connotes a blend of humanistic psychology with mystical and esoteric traditions and eastern religions aimed at personal well-being and personal development.
The notion of “spiritual experience” plays an important role in modern spirituality, but has a relatively recent origin. “
I think that sums it up pretty well! Especially the part that says “ … being animated by GOD.”
While it also says that there is no definitive definition, for me at least, being animated by GOD says it all! Everyone has there own definition because everyone has there own experience! It’s my understanding that the reason that everyone has there own unique experience, is that each soul, or spirit, allows GOD to experience himself in many different and unique ways.
In The Bible, GOD calls Himself “The I AM”. How Interesting is it that we also say “I am!” ? Think about that for a minute! If we say “I am” about ourselves, could it mean that we are a part of GOD manifested in a physical body? Meaning we are GOD!? Don’t take this out of context. I’m not talking about being egotistical! But what if we could truly understand that we are GOD in spirit, placed in a body and given the illusion that we are not! Or, a Veil is placed in the mind to make us forget who and what we truly are!? (Hmm a left and right hemisphere in the brain; of which, according to myth, we only use10-20% of? Interesting!)
Let’s play with the word Spirituality for a minute and break up the word. SPIRIT meaning to be formless. U Meaning you And I perhaps? AL or maybe ALL? And the last part of the word ITY which is a suffix used to form abstract nouns to express a state or condition. So You (and I) are All in the condition of spirit!
SO… being Spiritual, it would seem, has nothing to do with religion or a religious practice. But rather living life realizing that spirit is what animates us. Practicing spirituality would mean then to practice living our life from the standpoint of that realization. So far, so good, Right? MMMmmm Maybe not!
How many of us make the claim to being a “spiritual person”? Quite a few! Myself included! How many of us also are cruel, hurtful and unloving to others? Not to mention even our very own selves!?? Count me Guilty! You too? Yep!
So what’s the disconnect? Have you ever heard that EGO is an acronym for edge GOD out? How appropriate!
This is the veil that creates all of our problems! The EGO leaves no room for anything but itself! Some call it Satan, the devil, trickster or whatever. The fact is that it leaves us with a split mind! The part that is God’s and the part that the ego claims. Ask yourself this…Do you feel separate? Less than whole? Is there a sense of I’m different than you? Who; or rather what part of all of us says to ourselves: “I’m different”?
If GOD is ALL…Why do we look outside ourselves? Or imagine God to be “in Heaven” somewhere. Anywhere but in and OF ourselves! That could never be! I’m Not good enough to be GOD!! Let alone even like him or a part of him!
Really? Are we practicing spirituality or Edging God Out? Is religion just a disguise that the ego hides in, so we can feel righteous?
Just asking! I’m not against religion. But rather the way it is practiced, misused or it’s purpose misunderstood and abused!
So what IS SPIRITUALITY?
I think the reason the term has no set definition is because Spirit is formless and words are form. The two just don’t mix. The best we can do is point towards it. I also believe this is the purpose of religion. It doesn’t matter which one you pick to belong to! One is not better, or more right, than any other! The point of religion is that it points the way back to finding the TRUTH about who we REALLY are! It’s a tool AS A MEANS TO TRUTH rather than truth itself!
It works for those who use it as a tool to get there. For those that use it as truth… I think they miss the message and spend time arguing about “I’m right your wrong”. They get caught up in the religious doctrine of EGO. Which is all about separation and the small “me”.
Perhaps this is what Jesus meant when he said “He who has ears, let him hear.” which appears 7 times in the gospels. (8 if you count Mark 4:23.)
I mean no disrespect to anyone here! We are all on this planet to learn at our own pace and in our own way! Everyone has a path they must follow.
NONE of them are wrong!
You are where you are in your journey and it’s OK to be there! What’s not OK is to STAY there! 😉
Be open to growth and new Ideas. Take what you can use and disregard what you can’t.
Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water OK?
I also have to admit here that I am NO Bible scholar! Not even close! I don’t even go to church!
(I feel that I am church. Meaning: that GOD is always with me whether I accept it or not!)
So while the biblical quotes I enter in this blog do come to my mind. I want to be honest enough with you to say; that I Google them for chapter and verse, when they do come to mind.
I also do not claim any particular religion! But; since I was raised in the USA where Christianity is dominant, It got kind of lodged in my brain. So the terminology used here is simply a result of the culture I come from.
I try hard to study ALL spiritual teachings at least a little. That way I gain a wider perspective of who I am in TRUTH. As well as an understanding of people and culture. This also adds to understanding myself and the physical world I find myself in.
What does spirituality mean to you? Leave a comment! We can’t have a spiritual discussion if I do all the talking!
